Update – Rising Star Programme | Training firmly underway…

Posted on October 12th, 2011 by Sean Culey, CEO, SEVEN

I have now settled in as a student at Loughborough University, lectures have started and winter training is firmly under way.

My training is based around 5 skill sessions per week to learn technique and 5 sessions to develop athleticism. The first month of my training is dedicated to a basic level of fitness, flexibility and muscular endurance, and whilst it’s odd being in a new place, bright red and out of breath in front of a room full of people who I haven’t met before, it’s great fun! Training will then move on to focus on strength and, later, power.

Performing well

Within the group, I seem to perform well at the athleticism and strength work, which is reassuring. I am enjoying the opportunity to work hard on my technique, trying new slight variations with some good results. I have been set targets to reach by Christmas, varying from 40 to 52 metres depending on the weight of the hammer thrown. These would be very satisfying increases from my earliest turning throws in February of about 15 metres, so I’m keen to achieve them.

Achieving my goals

While the move to Loughborough is in some ways highly challenging, particularly the move away from my previous university, it is something that I am determined to meet head-on, so that I can continue to make the most out of this exciting opportunity. I am constantly surprised at the information and advice that I pick up from the athletes and coaches that I am surrounded by, and know that if there is anywhere that I can achieve my goals, it is here.

Thanks to SEVEN for helping me to pursue my dream!
